Hirschbein, Peretz

(1880-1948)
   American Yiddish dramatist and novelist. He was born in Poland and lived in Warsaw from 1904. His first drama Miriam is the story of a prostitute. In 1908 he organized a dramatic group in Odessa to produce Yiddish plays. From 1912 to 1917 he wrote a series of folk dramas, which were later staged at the New York Yiddish Art Theatre. He eventually settled in the US, where he wrote numerous works, including the Yiddish novel Babylon, describing Jewish life in America.
